Goal 1: Navigate your Findmypast tree.

Navigating your Findmypast Tree is essential to finding ancestors, viewing and updating their information, and producing charts and reports.

Choices

A Use the Family View or Family Group to see different ancestor views.

The default view for Findmypast trees is the Family View, which displays tiles with spouses and children, arranged horizontally.

  1. In the top menu, click Family tree and select your tree from the list.
  2. To see other areas of the view, use the scroll bars at the bottom or right.
  3. To extend a family line into the past, click an up arrow above a person's name. To see more recent descendants, click a down arrow below a person's name.
  4. To set a different person at the start of the family view, click the name near the top of the window and select a name from the list.



  5. To view the line of a spouse of a person in the current family line, click the small pedigree icon at the bottom of the spouse's tile.


  6. To search for a person in your tree, a) Click the magnifying glass icon; b) Type the name in the search field, and c) Select it from the drop-down list.
  7. To print a pedigree chart, click the Print icon (upper right) and complete the Print dialog.
  8. If you want to switch Family Group view, click the View menu and select Family Group. This displays the family members in a view that more closely resembles a family group sheet. You can click any person link to open the Profile for that person.

B Use the Pedigree view.

  1. In the top menu, click Family tree and select your tree from the list.
  2. In the View menu, select Pedigree to see the first four generations of your tree.





  3. To extend a family line, click the right arrow at the end of the line (if available).
  4. To set a different person at the start of the pedigree view, click the name near the top of the window and select a name from the list.
  5. To search for a person in your tree, a) Click the magnifying glass icon; b) Type the name in the search field, and c) Select it from the drop-down list.
  6. To print a pedigree chart, click the Print icon (upper right) and complete the Print dialog.
  7. To place a different person in the starting position of the tree view, a) Click the person's name in the tree view; and b) Click Their tree (bottom panel of the Summary window).
  8. To see the spouse or children for a person, click Spouse and Children below the person's name in the tree
  9. To see the siblings for a person, click Siblings below the person's name in the tree.

C View details for people in your tree.

  1. Click a name in your tree to open a Summary window with birth, marriage, and death details. You can click links in the Marriage section of the window to see details for spouses and children.









  2. In the Summary window, click Profile to display the Overview tab. The Timeline section on the left displays events, and the Relations section on the right displays parents, spouses, children, and siblings. In the Relations section, you can open person links to see Profile pages, or open and close parts of the section as needed.











  3. To see how the person in the current profile is related to someone else in your tree, a) Click the Kinship calculator button; b) Type the name of the other person in the Search bar and select it from the drop-down list; and c) Click Calculate.
  4. To see another version of the Relations page, click the Relations tab.
  5. To return to the tree view, click the View on tree button and select the view type.

D See and manage a list of all people in your tree.

  1. Click the View menu (to the right of your Tree name) and select People.
  2. To set the number of names displayed per page, click Results per page (lower right) and select 20 (default), 50, 100, 500, or 1000.
  3. To scroll to another page, a) Click the page number at the bottom of the screen; or b) Click a left or right arrow at the bottom to scroll by one page, or c) Click a double-arrow icon at the bottom to go to the first or last page of names.
  4. To sort the names, click any of the following categories. Clicking the same category a second time reverses the sort order.
    • First names
    • Last name
    • Birth date
    • Birth place
    • Death date
    • Death place
    • Hints
  5. To filter (limit) the list, type an entry in "Filter by First names", "Filter by Last names", or "Filter by Place". To cancel the filter, click "Reset filters" or delete the filter text you typed.
  6. To view the tree for a person in the list, click the corresponding View button and select the view type from the list.
  7. To add a person to the tree, a) Click Add person; b) Fill in the fields; and c) Click Save changes.
    Note : This does not connect the new person in the tree; it simply adds the person in the list of people. You can select the new person and add parents in the tree.


Goal 2: Edit or add information for people in your tree.

Choices

A View and edit information in a person's profile.

  1. Open the person's profile (see Choice C in Goal 1) and click the Facts and Events tab.
  2. To sort the facts and events by date (after the person's name), click the View Facts & Events chronologically button. To sort by name, click the View Facts & Events alphabetically button.





  3. To edit a fact, a) Hover over it and click the pencil icon that appears; b) In the Edit dialog, change fields as needed; c) If you want to mark a field as Preferred (it appears in the tree instead of another version of this fact) or Private (it does not appear when others view your tree), check the corresponding boxes in the dialog; and c) Click Save Fact.
  4. To add a fact, a) Click Add Fact (Facts and Events tab); b) In the "Add fact" dialog, select a fact type from the list; c) Fill in the fields; and c) Click Add Fact.
  5. To create a custom fact, a) Click Add Fact (Facts and Events tab); b) Click "Create custom fact" (near the top); c) Fill in the fields; and c) Click Add Fact.
  6. To remove a fact, a) Hover over it and click the trash icon that appears; and b) In the warning dialog, Click Delete.



Goal 3: Add or remove people in your Findmypast tree.

Choices

A Add parents for an individual.

If you are using the Pedigree view,

  1. Click Add Father or Add Mother.






  2. If the father or mother is new to your tree, fill in the fields in the dialog and click Save changes. Or,
  3. If the father or mother is already in your tree, a) Click "Select someone from your tree"; b) Type the name of the father or mother in the Search bar and select it from the drop-down list; c) Click Add Father or Add Mother.

If you are using the Family View,

  1. Click the plus sign above the person who needs a mother or father added.
  2. Choose the relative to be added and follow steps 2 and 3 above.

B Add a spouse or children for a person.

If you are using the Pedigree view,

  1. Click Spouse and Children below the person's name in the tree.
  2. If the spouse is new to your tree, fill in the fields in the dialog and click Save changes. Or,
  3. If the father or mother is already in your tree, a) Click "Select someone from your tree"; b) Type the name of the father or mother in the Search bar and select it from the drop-down list; and c) Click Add Spouse or Add Child.

If you are using the Family View,

  1. Click the plus sign below the person who needs a spouse or child added.
  2. Click Spouse or Child.
  3. If the father or mother is already in your tree, a) Click "Select someone from your tree"; b) Type the name of the father or mother in the Search bar and select it from the drop-down list; and c) Click Add Spouse or Add Child.

C Add siblings for an individual.

If you are using the Pedigree view,

  1. Click Siblings below the person's name in the tree.
  2. If the sibling is new to your tree, fill in the fields in the dialog and click Save changes. Or,
  3. If the sibling is already in your tree, a) Click "Select someone from your tree"; b) Type the name of the sibling in the Search bar and select it from the drop-down list; and c) Click Add Sibling.

If you are using the Family View,

  1. Click the plus sign below the person who needs a sibling added.
  2. Click Sibling.
  3. If the sibling is already in your tree, a) Click "Select someone from your tree"; b) Type the name of the sibling in the Search bar and select it from the drop-down list; and c) Click Add Sibling.

D Remove a person from your tree.

  1. Open the Profile page for the person to be deleted.
  2. In the top section, click the "Remove person" link.
  3. In the warning screen, click Delete.


Goal 4: Add notes for people in your tree.

Choices

A Add a note for an individual.

  1. Open a person's Profile and click the Notes tab.
  2. Click either Add Note button.
  3. In the Note box, type the note content.
  4. If you want to mark the note as private so it won't be seen by others who have access to your tree, check the "Private" box.
  5. Click Add Note.





Goal 5: Use hints for people in your tree.

Choices

A Review hints for an individual.

  1. Find a person in Pedigree view or Family view with an orange number near the name. This indicates there are record hints available for the person.
  2. Click the orange number to display the hints. (You can also click the Hints tab in the person's Profile.)


  3. If a hint does not match your person, you can click Reject. Then you can review a different hint.

  4. To review a hint, click Review.
  5. In the "Welcome to Review and Merge" window, click Next if you want to learn more about reviewing and merging records, or click Skip intro to proceed to the Review screen.


  6. Review the record hint information on the left of the screen, and then the information for the person from your tree on the right. Identical items are marked with a "Match" banner; non-identical items are marked with a "Different" banner; and items found in the hint but not in your tree are marked with a "New" banner.







  7. If the two sides of the screen do not represent the same person, click No, Reject (bottom of screen) and try another hint.
  8. If you are not sure it's the same person, click Maybe? (bottom of screen) and then click Continue. The hint will be stored under the "Maybe" listing on your Hints page.
  9. If the two versions match, click Yes, Next Step. This attaches the record to the person in your tree. Then proceed to Choice B below.
  10. If the bell icon (upper right) has a red dot, you can click it to see newly available hints in the drop-down list.

B Merge changes from records into your tree.

If there are differences between the record and your tree for an individual, you can merge the differences (changes) from the record into your tree.

  1. To decline the merge, click Skip merging. In the dialog that appears, click Skip merging again.

  2. To update all fact differences into your person's tree, click Update all (top of the screen). To undo the update, click Revert All.
  3. To update a single fact difference into your person's tree, click the arrow next to the fact difference. To undo the update, click the same arrow again.
  4. Click Save changes.
  5. Click Update my tree. There is no undo feature for this update, but you can manually change the new information in your tree if desired.


Goal 6: Add sources for people in your tree.

Choices

A Add a source for an individual.

  1. Open the Profile for a person and click the Facts and Events tab.
  2. Locate the information item that needs a source, and click the "Sources, Media, Notes" link for that item.
  3. Click the Source button.
  4. Type the title of the source. If you have previously recorded sources or imported them in a GEDCOM file, you can select the source from the drop-down list.
  5. Type the page number, web URL, and note or comments for the source.
  6. If you want to mark the source as private, check the "Private" box.
  7. Click Add Source. The source now appears in the Profile page, next to "Source"




Goal 7: Manage your Findmypast trees.

Choices

A Create and view additional trees.

  1. To create an additional tree, follow the steps in Goal 1 above.
  2. To view a list of your trees, click Family tree (top menu) and select View all trees.

B Export or delete trees.

  1. To export a tree as a GEDCOM file, click its Export icon (upper right). A progress sentence shows the current number of people added to the file, and you can continue viewing your tree or even shut down your device while the Export is in progress.
    Note : The Export process does not copy media files from your tree to the GEDCOM; you will need to add those items to the new tree.
  2. When the Export finishes, click Download Tree. The GEDCOM file with your tree information is saved to your download folder location. You can use this file to create a family tree on another site if desired.
  3. To delete a tree, a) Click its Trash icon, and b) Click Delete.
    Important : There is no warning dialog with this delete process, so make sure you are deleting the correct tree.
