“Hidden” Features in The Family History Guide

You can find almost anything you need in The Family History Guide by using the top menus (or side menus if you’re on a tablet or phone). But there are some “hidden” features on the site that are harder to find but definitely worth the search. Here are eight of our favorites:

  1. Blank Tracker Sheets—When you log in to the Online Tracker, the link that appears above the Project links says. “Click here for blank Online Tracker pages.” This reveals button that toggles blank-page mode for all Online Tracker pages, so that none of the notes or slider bar settings for the account will appear. That way, you can print generic sheets that are easy to print and fill in by hand so that an instructor can assess what students know, in or out of class. Be sure to reset the toggle button when you are done with blank-page mode.
  2. Customizing Menus—You can actually choose which menus you want to show in The Family History Guide. To do so, a)  Click the My Account button; b) Click Menu Customization; c) Click the menu items you want to hide (all are selected to show, by default); and d) Click Save Settings. You can reset the menu choices any time you want.
  3. County Resource Links—In each U.S. state page, click the Counties link on the left side of the page (or scroll to the bottom of the page). You’ll see links for resources from FamilySearch, Ancestry, Linkpendium, Genealogy Inc, US Genweb, and Genealogy Trails. Facebook pages for county genealogical societies may also be included.
  4. Article Quizzes for U.S. Research—In the Trainers menu, select Quizzes and then scroll to the bottom of the page. You’ll see a section for United States, with links to 5-question quizzes for a number of articles. These are handy for training classes or for individual self-study.
  5. Info Buttons—In many of the United States research pages you’ll see Info buttons. When you click them, you get a list of timings and topics inside the video. These are similar to YouTube chapters, but you use these without having to open the video first.
  6. “Main” Links in the Vault—In the Vault, look for “Main” links in many of the categories down the page. These take you to the main part of The Family History Guide for the selected topic. In the main part of the site, click the available Vault link to return to the location where you were in the Vault.
  7. U.K. and International Pages—These two pages are accessible from the main menus, but they are often overlooked. The United Kingdom page has only QUIKLinks – no articles or videos – for record collections that span multiple countries in the U.K. The International page has links to articles and videos that could apply to any country.  There is also an International link in the Vault.
  8. Hiding Goals—Did you know you can make the list of Goals at the top of a research page disappear? But why would you want to? If you are using a phone, a long list of goals can take up valuable screen space, so you can click the Goals button to hide the Goal list, and click it again to show the Goals.

We hope you enjoy these hidden gems in The Family History Guide!

  1. Thank you SO much for the tips and tidbits for The Family History Guide’s “hidden gems.” I’d like to copy these to give to those at The FamilySearch Center and Mesa County Genealogical Society. Hope it’s alright.

    • Hi Bonnie – the preferred way would be to share the link to the blog article. You can also print the blog article.
