Update: More Video Info Links

In The Family History Guide, video info links have been around for a while. They are the small “i” buttons that appear below video link titles. When you hover over an info button, a list of links appears that lets you see the sections of a video at a glance. Then you can click any of them to go directly to that part of the video.

For example, here’s what you would see when you hover over one of the info links in Goal 6 of the England country page:

There are several important advantages to video info links. The links help you

  • Get to a desired location inside a video quickly and easily.
  • See the main sections at a glance
  • Find content that you may not be expecting. For example, a video about immigration may have a helpful section on maps, and a video on church records may also discuss migration patterns.

The number of info links for a given video may range from one to ten. If more than ten important sections are included in a video, only the first ten are listed in the info button.

More Info Links

Recently we’ve added quite a few video info buttons to the site. The United States and England country pages now have info buttons for most videos, and more are being added for Goals in other countries. Note: Some videos do not lend themselves well to section links, so info buttons are not included for them.

Scrolling Tips

Here are some additional tips that can help you navigate through video content:

  • YouTube: In addition to dragging the timing button to change your viewing position, you can hover over the timing bar in different spots to see previews of video content. The actual viewing position does not change until you click a a location.
  • Left and right arrows: In YouTube, pressing the right or left arrow on the keyboard advances or rewinds the video five seconds with each press. You can hold the key down for smooth and slower scrolling. These arrow keys work for some FamilySearch videos but not all. When they are functional, they move the timing from about 13 to 20 seconds, depending on the video.
