Update: Name Changes for “LDS”
Several days ago, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced that members, the media, and websites should follow these guidelines in regards to naming:
- Use the full name of the Church (see above) on first mention, with “the Church of Jesus Christ” being an acceptable shortened form.
- Avoid the term “LDS” when referring to the Church or its members, instead using “Latter-day Saint” or “Latter-day Saints.”
- Avoid the term “Mormon” in referring to the Church or its members.
You can see the new style guide here, or read an article summarizing the changes here.
Changes in The Family History Guide
In keeping with these recommendations, we have updated The Family History Guide website to use the new guidelines. For example, the Faiths menu now includes “Church of Jesus Christ” instead of “LDS”, and the “LDS” references have been changed to “Latter-day Saints.”
Note: We have not changed references to other groups or websites that continue to use “LDS” or “Mormon,” such as LDS.org, LDSGenealogy.com, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. When these entities change their titles, we’ll make the corresponding changes on our site. Also, when a video or article link in The Family History Guide refers to an item with “LDS” or “Mormon” in its title, the link will not be retitled until the actual article or video is.
In the near future, we will be adding URL redirects so that our lds.html file can be renamed, without causing broken links.
