Weekly Family History Activities

Week 39: September 18–24, New Testament

Come, Follow Me is a resource offered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is designed to be used in the home to support personal and family scripture study to build faith in Heavenly Father and His plan of salvation and in the Savior Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Come, Follow Me is self-contained and adequate, when used properly. Products and materials designed to supplement this resource, though they may be helpful in some instances, are not necessary for a successful home study program. <

2 Corinthians 8–13

“God Loveth a Cheerful Giver”

2 Corinthians 8:1–15; 9:5–15

I can cheerfully share what I have to bless the poor and needy.

From Come, Follow Me:

You might pray for guidance about what you can do to bless someone in need.

2 Corinthians 8:4—Praying us with much entreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints.

Ministering through Family History

During RootsTech 2020, our leaders focused on how temple and family history resources can be used to minister to all of God’s children—and emphasized that "all" really means "all." Elder Bednar encourages us to watch the full presentation, which you can read or watch here. View the following video for an example:

There is always a great family history activity that you can do with those you visit. Many will lead to further discussion, strengthening friendships, and teaching opportunities. See 5-Minute Ideas for Latter-day Saints for ideas including the following to see what might be applicable to those to whom you minister.

Select those that will work to involve all families and family members in attendance. The Family History Fun Basket is a great one because you can select the questions to fit the group.

Discover the past! The Year I Was Born on FamilySearch Activities is a great activity to do with any kind of group.

Look up photos and more information as you look at different birth years (change right on the page). Use a search engine to learn what world events or inventions happened that year. How was life different back then?

Help others find an ancestor they would like to know better on their fan chart, and check out a Timeline and Map. See also: 10 Ways to Find Ancestor's Stories. See the following video for ways to connect with ancestors and their stories:

See more examples on The Family History Guide Youtube channel activities playlist. You could help families learn about their family name, or about their ancestral homelands or have a myriad of other experiences! See the Activities Overview.

Additional family history ministering resources:

2 Corinthians 12:5–10

The Savior’s grace is sufficient to help me find strength in my weakness.

“Forget Me Not” by Annie Henrie Nader (used with permission)

From Come, Follow Me:

What does it mean to you that God’s “grace is sufficient” for you?

Record and Share Personal Testimonies

"Generations are affected by the choices we make. Share your testimony with your family; encourage them to remember how they felt when they recognized the Spirit in their lives and to record those feelings in journals and personal histories so that their own words may, when needed, bring to their remembrance how good the Lord has been to them." Ronald A. Rasband, Lest Thou Forget

You can preserve a hand-written document by uploading a photo, and you can record your personal witness of Jesus Christ on FamilySearch using the FamilySearch Memories app or the Record My Story feature on FamilySearch Discovery. You can also share these items with others in FamilySearch via text, email, etc. by tapping the "Share" symbol.

As you also record the testimonies of living loved ones, you preserve their witness of Christ to influence generations to come. Another idea is to have a family member read and record and preserve an ancestor's written testimony.

The Living Christ

As a family, you may want to audio or video record members of your own family taking turns reading from The Living Christ: The Testimony of the Apostles.

Print copies here.

You could also audio record it directly to FamilySearch using the FamilySearch Memories app or on FamilySearch Discovery. You could record and share excerpts or read it all.

2 Corinthians 9:6–7

From Come, Follow Me:

Does your family know someone who could be described as “a cheerful giver”? How can we make our service to others more cheerful?

Helping Others Find Joy in Temple and Family History Work

“Have you seen someone’s eyes light up when they add an ancestor to Family Tree? Have you felt the power of someone’s testimony about doing temple work for a loved one beyond the veil? These are some of the sweetest experiences of helping others with temple and family history work.

On the other hand, most of us have probably had the opposite experience: we mention family history and see people’s eyes glaze over, or we watch them make a hasty retreat.

How can we help bridge the gap between these two attitudes? How do we help others move from disinterest or even resistance to enthusiasm and joy? Here are five ideas:

  1. Remember that family history is a spiritual work.
  2. Personalize the experience.
  3. Focus on discovery experiences.
  4. Guide, but don’t take over.
  5. Emphasize both halves of the blessing (temple and family history work)

...As people experience the joy of temple and family history work, their testimonies will be strengthened. They will feel a greater desire to make temple and family history work a priority in their lives. In doing so, they will help gather the family of God and bring untold blessings to their families on both sides of the veil.”

Read more about each of the five ideas in the article quoted above by Katherine Grant: 5 Ideas for Helping Others Find Joy in Temple and Family History Work

Watch the following videos for examples and read more about them in this article: Helping Friends Discover Their Family History

To help others find those persons in their family tree who need temple ordinances completed and to learn how to serve them, there are step-by-step instructions in the Church of Jesus Christ section of The Family History Guide. Here you will find links to the following:

Youth And Technology

When Elder David A. Bednar said, "Your fingers have been trained to text and tweet to accelerate and advance the work of the Lord—not just to communicate quickly with your friends," he was talking to the youth of the church!

“I invite the young people of the Church to learn about and experience the Spirit of Elijah. I encourage you to study, to search out your ancestors, and to prepare yourselves to perform proxy baptisms in the house of the Lord for your kindred dead (see D&C 124:28–36). And I urge you to help other people identify their family histories.

As you respond in faith to this invitation, your hearts shall turn to the fathers. The promises made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob will be implanted in your hearts. Your patriarchal blessing, with its declaration of lineage, will link you to these fathers and be more meaningful to you.

Your love and gratitude for your ancestors will increase. Your testimony of and conversion to the Savior will become deep and abiding. And I promise you will be protected against the intensifying influence of the adversary." General Conference October 2011, The Hearts of the Children Shall Turn

Get to know The Family History Guide to be able to help others do temple and family history work - it is truly your new best friend! It absolutely lives up to its mission to “greatly increase the number of people actively involved in family history worldwide, and to make everyone's family history journey easier, more efficient, and more enjoyable.”
