Give the gift of indexing

Learn to index records, helping people around the world find their ancestors.

Indexing: A Journey of Discovery and Service

Indexing makes records searchable by others. When you index a record (birth, marriage, death, etc.), you copy pieces of information from it and create an index, something like the index for a book. Then FamilySearch puts your index online, and other people can use it to find their ancestors more easily.

Here are two things that will help you have a successful indexing experience:

1) Learn the indexing guidelines; and
2) Start with indexing records that are easier to do, and then work up to more challenging records if you like.

Note that many records have cursive writing, so if you are not too familiar with that, you may want to brush up on it.

  1. In The Family History Guide, click the FamilySearch menu (top) and select Project 5: Indexing.
  2. Read the instructions for indexing in Goal 2
  3. Select a batch of records to index, as explained in Goal 3.
  4. Once you get the feel for indexing, set some goals for progress and make it a regular activity.

Using the Get Involved App

The Get Involved App enables you to review and correct indexes that have been created by artificial intelligence. Read this article and watch the video below to get started.
