Come, Follow Me Companion

2021: Doctrine & Covenants

September 27–October 3

Doctrine and Covenants 109-110

It Is Thy House, a Place of Thy Holiness.

The era we now live in—with accelerated temple work and ordinances available to millions of the living and the dead—had its beginning in Kirtland, when “the veil o’er the earth [was] beginning to burst” (The Spirit of God).

The priesthood keys needed to accomplish God’s work are in the Church today.

From Come, Follow Me

Ponder what you can do to help in the work related to these keys.

Elijah stood before Joseph and Oliver and said: “Behold, the time has fully come, which was spoken of by the mouth of Malachi [see also D&C 2:1-3]—testifying that he [Elijah] should be sent, before the great and dreadful day of the Lord come—“To turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the children to the fathers, lest the whole earth be smitten with a curse—Therefore, the keys of this dispensation are committed into your hands; and by this ye may know that the great and dreadful day of the Lord is near, even at the doors” (D&C 110:14–16).

“The restoration of the sealing authority by Elijah in 1836 was necessary to prepare the world for the Savior’s Second Coming and initiated a greatly increased and worldwide interest in family history research.” David A, Bednar The Hearts of the Children Shall Turn

Eternal Families

Play "The Human Knot.” Write a “Family Proclamation” outlining what you will do as a family to be together forever -- to hold on to each other and never let go! Have everyone sign it and hang it in your home and upload it to FamilySearch.

Temple And Family History Work

President and Sister Nelson invited us to make temple and family history work more a part of our lives. Watch the full presentation: Open the Heavens Through Temple and Family History Work.

Sister Nelson : “It is my testimony that however fabulous your life is right now, or however discouraging and heartbreaking it may be, your involvement in temple and family history work will make it better. What do you need in your life right now? More love? More joy? More self-mastery? More peace? More meaningful moments? More of a feeling that you're making a difference? More fun? More answers to your soul-searching questions? More heart-to-heart connections with others? More understanding of what you are reading in the scriptures? More ability to love and to forgive? More ability to pray with power? More inspiration and creative ideas for your work and other projects? More time for what really matters? I entreat you to make a sacrifice of time to the Lord by increasing the time you spend doing temple and family history work, and then watch what happens. It is my testimony that when we show the Lord we are serious about helping our ancestors, the heavens will open and we will receive all that we need.”

Explore the Ordinances tab on your FamilySearch fan chart to see which or your ancestors and their families have work to be done. Check out Ordinances Ready, and read how to verify names and relationships

Doctrine and Covenants 110:15

From Come, Follow Me

What might help “turn the hearts” of your children to their ancestors?

"I invite the young people of the Church to learn about and experience the Spirit of Elijah. I encourage you to study, to search out your ancestors, and to prepare yourselves to perform proxy baptisms in the house of the Lord for your kindred dead (see D&C 124:28–36). And I urge you to help other people identify their family histories.

As you respond in faith to this invitation, your hearts shall turn to the fathers. The promises made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob will be implanted in your hearts. Your patriarchal blessing, with its declaration of lineage, will link you to these fathers and be more meaningful to you.

Your love and gratitude for your ancestors will increase. Your testimony of and conversion to the Savior will become deep and abiding. And I promise you will be protected against the intensifying influence of the adversary." David A. Bednar The Hearts of the Children Shall Turn

See the video The Promised Blessings of Family History, the video below, and the blessings listed by Elder Renlund in Family History and Temple Work: Sealing and Healing

Fulfillment of Promises in Your Life

Note: President Nelson encouraged us to do the following for six months, but it may be a wonderful opportunity to carry this invitation through your study of the Doctrine and Covenants this year:

“As you study your scriptures for the next six months, I encourage you to make a list of all that the Lord has promised He will do for covenant Israel. I think you will be astounded! Ponder these promises. Talk about them with your family and friends. Then live and watch for these promises to be fulfilled in your own life." (President Russell M. Nelson, Let God Prevail, October 2020 General Conference)

Find what the Lord has promised He will do for Covenant Israel in Doctrine and Covenants 109-110 and write or audio-record about what they mean to you and those you love.
