for Book of Mormon

Week 27: July 1–7 | Alma 17-22

("Redeeming Light" by Annie Henrie Nader—used with permission)

Alma 17-22 "I Will Make an Instrument of Thee"

Alma 17–22

Alma 17:1–4

Simple, consistent acts of devotion to Christ help me receive His power

From Come, Follow Me:

What do you learn from Alma 17:1–4 about how to keep your testimony of and commitment to Jesus Christ strong?

Alma 2 “Now these sons of Mosiah were with Alma at the time the angel first appeared unto him; therefore Alma did rejoice exceedingly to see his brethren; and what added more to his joy, they were still his brethren in the Lord; yea, and they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth; for they were men of a sound understanding and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God.

3 But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God.”

"Nothing opens the heavens quite like the combination of increased purity, exact obedience, earnest seeking, daily feasting on the words of Christ in the Book of Mormon, and regular time committed to temple and family history work." President Russell M. Nelson, Revelation for the Church, Revelation for Our Lives

Personal Revelation and Family History

"I have learned...that even the best technology can never be a substitute for revelation from heaven....This is a spiritual work, and the Lord directs it through His Holy Spirit.

Just a few weeks ago, I was working on my family history with a consultant by my side and another helper on the phone. On the computer screen before me was a problem beyond my mortal power to solve. I saw two names, sent to me by the wonders of technology, of people who might be waiting for a temple ordinance. But the trouble was that the names were different, but there was a reason to believe they might be the same person. My task was to determine what was true.

"I asked my consultants to tell me. They said, "No, you must choose." And they were completely sure I would discover the truth. The computer, with all its power and information, had left me the blessing of staring at those names on a screen, evaluating the available information, seeking other research, praying silently, and discovering what was true. As I prayed, I knew with surety what to do—just as I have in other situations when I needed to rely on heaven's help to solve a problem.

We do not know what marvels God will inspire people to create to help in His work of gathering His family. But whatever marvelous inventions may come, their use will require the Spirit working in people like you and me. This should not surprise us. After all, these are beloved sons and daughters of God. He will send whatever inspiration is needed to give them the opportunity to return to Him." Henry B. Eyring Gathering the Family of God

Decide how you and your family can be better prepared through temple and family history work to receive the revelation God would send you. Check out the Get Started page in the Family History Guide to see different ways you can begin or continue your temple and family history journey, to reap the rewards including hearing Him more clearly.

Alma 17:6–12; 19:16–36

I can be an instrument in God’s hands.

From Come, Follow Me:

How can you become a more effective instrument in helping others come unto Christ?

Family History and Missionary Work

After the sons of Mosiah were converted, they felt a great desire to share what they had learned and felt with others. Their prayers to be "instruments in God's hands" were answered by the Lord: "I will make an instrument of thee in my hands unto the salvation of many souls." (Alma 17:11

David A. Bednar: "...family history is not simply an interesting program or activity sponsored by the Church; rather, it is a vital part of the work of salvation and exaltation. You have been prepared for this day and to build up the kingdom of God. You are here upon the earth now to assist in this glorious work." The Hearts of the Children Shall Turn

Read this FamilySearch blog post—The Power of Family History in Missionary Work. Then talk together about this quote by Elder Bednar: "The artificial boundary line we so often place between missionary work and temple and family history work is being erased; this is one great work of salvation."

Many people desire to know of their heritage. As they learn about those who went before them, they may become interested in knowing about eternal families and what the gospel of Jesus Christ teaches about sealing families together. Thus, teaching about temple work and helping with family history can be a successful finding, teaching, and retention tool.

"Missionary work and family history and temple work are complementary and interrelated aspects of one great work, 'that in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him'" (Ephesians 1:10). " Missionary, Family History, and Temple Work

Divide into companionships and practice door approaches with this guidance from Preach My Gospel: "Talk to people about their families. Help them see how the restored gospel can be a blessing to their families. Offer to help them find the names of grandparents, great-grandparents, or other ancestors. Enlist the help of ward temple and family history consultants."

Plan Family History Activities

Check out  5-Minute Ideas for Latter-day Saints with the idea in mind that temple and family history work includes many facets, and can be fit into many different time frames. See Family Activities: Anytime Activities and Games which includes “Quick and Easy Family History Activity Time Fillers.” Family history activities often are the catalyst to help family members and others have a desire to do proxy temple work for ancestors. Every little bit you do brings blessings and will most likely be a great motivation to participate even more. See Family History and Temple Work: Sealing and Healing, and related resources here.

Alma 19:36

From Come, Follow Me

After recounting the conversion of Lamoni and his people, Mormon summarized the account with an observation about Jesus Christ. What does Alma 19:36 teach you about the Lord’s character? What else does the account in Alma 19:16–36 teach you about Him? When have you felt the Lord’s arm extended toward you?

Record Testimonies of Jesus Christ

How do we assure that our posterity will know how we feel about the gospel of Jesus Christ? Have we recorded our testimonies and those of other living relatives to give our posterity the strength of our conviction?

Preserve a hand-written document by uploading it as a photo, and you can record your personal witness of Jesus Christ on FamilySearch using the FamilySearch Memories Audio app or the Record My Story feature on FamilySearch Discovery. You can also share the document or audio recording with others via facebook, email, etc. by tapping the "Share" symbol.

Recording can be done individually or in a family setting or with others. You may want to help young children write or record what they feel about Jesus Christ.

Your Personal History

Write a story about your life as you study each Come, Follow Me lesson. By the end of the year, you will have 50 stories! Save as a story (also consider audio-recording) and add it to your FamilySearch memories to preserve it. Use your own questions, those from (or inspired by) Come, Follow Me, or the #52 Stories Project

  • What gives you courage to do what the Lord needs you to do?
  • How do you share the gospel with others?
  • Share how and why you began indexing?
