Weekly Family History Activities

Week 19: May 1–7 New Testament

Come, Follow Me is a resource offered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is designed to be used in the home to support personal and family scripture study to build faith in Heavenly Father and His plan of salvation and in the Savior Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Come, Follow Me is self-contained and adequate, when used properly. Products and materials designed to supplement this resource, though they may be helpful in some instances, are not necessary for a successful home study program.

Luke 12–17; John 11

“Rejoice with Me; for I Have Found My Sheep Which Was Lost”

Luke 12; 14–16, Luke 15

Heavenly Father rejoices when those who are lost are found

From Come, Follow Me:

What messages did Jesus have for those who are “lost”—including those who don’t think they are lost? What messages did He have for people who seek those who are lost?

"The dead who have not heard or who rejected the gospel in mortality are in darkness, or in a state of misery (see Alma 40:14; D&C 138:2). Yet because of our Savior's visit, we have a hope for their salvation. We may go to the temple and turn the key, opening the gates of heaven for them and, by our service, for ourselves. For we know "that they without us cannot be made perfect—neither can we without our dead be made perfect" (D&C 128:15). Mercy and justice combine to give all of our Father's children the opportunity to return to Him." (Religion 250 Manual - Read more here.)

"I testify that God the Father wants His children home again, in families and in glory. ... I promise you the inspired help that you seek and need." Henry B. Eyring, Gathering the Family of God

Taking Ancestors To The Temple

"The facts of Jesus' death and Resurrection are hailed by those of Christian denominations as fundamental tenets. However, what Jesus' immortal spirit did after His death and before His Resurrection is a mystery to all but the Latter-day Saints. And the significance of what He did during those hours provides the doctrinal foundation for building temples across the earth." Spencer J. Condie, The Savior's Visit to the Spirit World

Our ancestors are being taught the gospel in the spirit world, and they need our help. Here are some ways to find those who need ordinance work done (sign up for a FamilySearch Account first):

Using Ordinances Ready, you can also get to know each person you are about to do ordinances for. Tap View Relationship to see how you are related, and tap View Person or the person’s name to look at life events, memories, and photos in Family Tree

Once you have reserved family names, Ordinances Ready allows you to print temple cards or take a QR code to the temple for easy printing.

Watch the following video from President Nelson: "You cannot imagine, my son, how many spirits there are in the spirit world who have not yet received the gospel ... But many are receiving it, and a great work is being accomplished. Many are anxiously looking forth to their friends who are still living to administer for them in the temples."

Read more about the story here. President Nelson invites us to gather Israel on both sides of the veil. Watch his General Conference talk to us all and his broadcast to the youth in which he states: "My dear extraordinary youth, you were sent to earth at this precise time, the most crucial time in the history of the world, to help gather Israel. There is nothing happening on this earth right now that is more important than that. There is nothing of greater consequence. Absolutely nothing. This gathering should mean everything to you. This is the mission for which you were sent to earth."

See Temple Opportunities in The Family History Guide for step-by-step instructions and information for finding those who need temple ordinance proxy work and how to do their work. Plan time to find those in your family lines who need ordinance work done. Pray to find them.

When you exercise faith, you will receive inspiration to find the information needed for the temple. As Quentin L. Cook taught, you should not "underestimate the influence of the deceased in assisting your efforts."

Get to Know Your Ancestors

We can all prepare for our next visit to the temple and have names ready. See ”ordinances Ready” above, and be sure to check out “relationship” and “view person.” Take time to discover facts and stories about those whose names you have found. See the activities described in the videos below, and find more on The Family History Guide - YouTube Channel (see the activities playlist), and check out 10 Ways To Discover, Gather, and Share Ancestor Stories

The “Get Involved” App

As more and more people worldwide desire to connect and find their ancestors, FamilySearch’s “Get Involved” app is a way to help people make more personal discoveries in family history.

“Reviewing a name on a record that was indexed by handwriting recognition artificial intelligence is one task that can be done with the Get Involved app.

For decades, FamilySearch has relied on volunteers to help index records. However, the process of indexing — which includes deciphering handwriting and typing in multiple fields — can be tedious, frustrating and time-consuming for some.

To accelerate the availability of records for people worldwide, FamilySearch has been using artificial intelligence to quickly scan handwritten genealogical documents and generate a computer-assisted index of names. Rather than replacing human indexers, this process augments them.” Read more in this article: FamilySearch’s New Get Involved App

So give this app a try! Where can you use the Get Involved App? The The Genealogy Reporter states:

“Everywhere! Got to wait in the car at the school pick-up line, use the app. How about waiting for the kids after practice…use the app. Wind down from a tough day and de-stress by using the app. Use if for homeschooling the kiddos on cursive handwriting. There are likely more than a dozen reasons to join me and get obsessed with the FamilySearch Get Involved App. Oh, and let me know your progress in the comments below or on our Facebook page. Luke 17:11–19

Gratitude for my blessings will bring me closer to God

From Come, Follow Me:

If you had been one of the ten lepers, do you think you would have returned to thank the Savior? What additional blessings did the thankful leper receive because he gave thanks?

"When our children were very small, I started to write down a few things about what happened every day...so that my children could have the memory someday when they would need it ... Before I would write, I would ponder this question: 'Have I seen the hand of God reaching out to touch us or our children or our family today?' ...I realized that trying to remember had allowed God to show me what He had done. More than gratitude began to grow in my heart. Testimony grew. I became ever more certain that our Heavenly Father hears and answers prayers. I felt more gratitude for the softening and refining that come because of the Atonement of the Savior Jesus Christ. And I grew more confident that the Holy Ghost can bring all things to our remembrance—even things we did not notice or pay attention to when they happened." Henry B. Eyring, O Remember, Remember

Record Your Gratitude

Begin or continue to write in your daily journal, or in a “Gratitude,” or "Tender Mercies" journal. Consider making a visit, or writing a letter to express gratitude to a friend, neighbor, or family member. Create a gratitude catalog of your blessings. What you record becomes your personal history and can influence generations to come—changing hearts and bringing your family members to Christ.

With the FamilySearch Memories Audio app or the Record My Story feature on FamilySearch Discovery, gathering, digitally recording, sharing, and preserving has never been easier. Read more in The Family History Guide here.

See President Nelson’s Prayer of Gratitude, Message of Hope and Healing in which he invited each of us to “turn social media into your own personal gratitude journal. Post every day about what you are grateful for, whom you are grateful for, and why you are grateful. At the end of seven days, see if you feel happier and more at peace. Use the hashtag #GiveThanks. Working together, we can flood social media with a wave of gratitude that reaches the four corners of the earth. Perhaps this will fulfill, in part, the promise God gave to Father Abraham, that through his descendants "all families of the earth [shall] be blessed."

See Week 20, 2020 in “Weekly Family history Activities - A Come, Follow Me Companion” to find even more ideas for preserving and sharing records.

John 11:1–46

Jesus Christ is the Resurrection and the Life

From Come, Follow Me:

The miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead was a powerful and irrefutable testimony that Jesus was truly the Son of God and the promised Messiah. What words, phrases, or details in John 11:1–46 strengthen your faith that Jesus Christ is “the resurrection, and the life”? What does it mean to you that Jesus is “the resurrection, and the life”?
