Weekly Family History Activities

Week 20: May 8–14 New Testament

Come, Follow Me is a resource offered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is designed to be used in the home to support personal and family scripture study to build faith in Heavenly Father and His plan of salvation and in the Savior Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Come, Follow Me is self-contained and adequate, when used properly. Products and materials designed to supplement this resource, though they may be helpful in some instances, are not necessary for a successful home study program.

Matthew 19–20; Mark 10; Luke 18

“What Lack I Yet?”

Matthew 19:3–9; Mark 10:2–12

From Come, Follow Me:

How does your knowledge of the Father’s plan of salvation affect the way you think and feel about marriage?

Covenant Marriage

Gather the family to share your family “falling in love” and marriage stories, or the stories of other living friends or leaders.. You can also remotely share this experience. Write these stories down or audio record them, add photos, and  upload to FamilySearch. Share photo albums, videos, and keepsakes. You could print the stories and place them in your home where they can be easily seen, and consider posting them on your family social media sites.

Celebrate The Marriages of Ancestors

Talk about the marriages of your ancestors. Find stories using the FamilySearch Fan Chart, the All The Stories site, or any of the resources in this list of 10 Ways to Find Ancestor's Stories. Check your relationships to them.

  • You could make a book of the love stories of your ancestors (a nice family history gift).
  • Plan to go to the temple to perform sealings if possible. Work as a family to find missing marriage certificates. Check out record hints and research helps on the fan chart.
  • Use the FamilySearch timeline of each ancestor, and locate the places where family marriages took place. Read about those places as you study the stories and view the related details and documents.
  • Another idea is to mark these places on a wall map.
  • Marking the temples in which ancestors were sealed or where proxy work was done would be a fun activity also. Check out My Ancestor's Temples.

The Family: A Proclamation To The World

You may want to consider reading The Family: A Proclamation to the World aloud, recording it for your living family and uploading this recording to FamilySearch Memories for generations to come. Each family member could take turns reading a paragraph including younger children - even if they need help.

Another variation is to ask individuals or families to memorize a section and then recite and record the entire document together. This will become a sacred reminder of how your family feels about marriage and family in the Lord’s kingdom on earth and in the eternities. Another idea is to create a video of your family reading or reciting this document and then preserve it.

Have family members sign a copy of it to display in your home and possibly share on social media along with your feelings about marriage and family.

Create a book with family pictures correlated to parts of The Family: A Proclamation to the World would make a beautiful gift and an heirloom to pass on.

Matthew 20:25–28; Mark 10:42–45

From Come, Follow Me:

What is the meaning of the phrase “whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant”? (Matthew 20:27). How did Jesus Christ exemplify this principle? How can we follow His example in our family, our ward or branch, and our neighborhood?

Ministering through Family History

During RootsTech 2020, our leaders focused on how temple and family history resources can be used to minister to all of God’s children—and emphasized that "all" really means "all." Elder Bednar encourages us to watch the full presentation, which you can read or watch here. Here is a clip:

There is always a great family history activity that you can do with those you visit. Many will lead to further discussion, strengthening friendships, and teaching opportunities. See 5-Minute Ideas for Latter-day Saints for ideas and the list below to see what might be applicable to those to whom you minister.

Here are some examples of activities you can do with other families - select those that will work to involve all families in attendance. The Family History Fun Basket is a great one because you can select the questions to fit the group.

See more ideas on The Family History Guide Youtube channel. You could help families learn about their family name, or about their ancestral homelands or have a myriad of other experiences! See the Activities Overview.

The Year I Was Born

Discover the past! The Year I Was Born on FamilySearch Activities is a great activity to do with any kind of group.

Ask what inventions have come since the year you are exploring, look up photos and more information as you look at birth years. See the fan chart. Capture, preserve and share these conversations by using FamilySearch apps.
