A Come, Follow Me Companion

2025: Doctrine & Covenants

Week 9: February 24–March 2

Come, Follow Me is a resource offered by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is designed to be used in the home to support personal and family scripture study to build faith in Heavenly Father and His plan of salvation and in the Savior Jesus Christ and His Atonement. Come, Follow Me is self-contained and adequate, when used properly. Products and materials designed to supplement this resource, though they may be helpful in some instances, are not necessary for a successful home study program.

Doctrine and Covenants 18—"The Worth of Souls Is Great"

Doctrine and Covenants 18:1-5

Build up my church.

From Come, Follow Me :

In section 18, the Lord gave Oliver Cowdery instructions to help lay the foundation of the Church of Jesus Christ.

First Convert Stories

Many of us have ancestors who were "foundation layers." Preserve family history stories of the first converts in your ancestral lines, even if the first convert is you! You may be the one laying the foundation for your posterity. Here are some fun ideas:

  • Make a book of these stories for your family (bind the stories, put in a notebook, or share digitally).
  • Send this collection of stories with your missionaries, as they are asked to bring family history stories with them.
  • Give them as gifts.
  • Place in your memories on FamilySearch and attach them to your tree.See this FamilySearch article and Project 2: Memories.

See Week 31, 2024 for more ideas, including illustrating conversion stories. These testimonies are a great way to strengthen the testimonies of living family members.

You could also plan a "Gathering" activity to share the recorded testimonies and photos of your ancestors (see above). Have a prayer of gratitude together for the legacy they have given you.

    Doctrine and Covenants 18:10-13

The worth of souls is great in the sight of God.

    From Come, Follow Me :

How does God show you that you are of great worth to Him? How does this affect the way you feel about yourself and others?

    Keeping a Journal

Consider keeping a written journal of God's hand in your life and in the lives of your family members. Write about your gratitude for the tender mercies you have experienced and that you see around you. You can also record journal entries using the FamilySearch Memories Audio app or the "Record My Story" feature on FamilySearch Discovery.

"When our children were very small, I started to write down a few things about what happened every day...so that my children could have the memory someday when they would need it ... Before I would write, I would ponder this question: 'Have I seen the hand of God reaching out to touch us or our children or our family today?' ...I realized that trying to remember had allowed God to show me what He had done. More than gratitude began to grow in my heart. Testimony grew. I became ever more certain that our Heavenly Father hears and answers prayers. I felt more gratitude for the softening and refining that come because of the Atonement of the Savior Jesus Christ. And I grew more confident that the Holy Ghost can bring all things to our remembrance—even things we did not notice or pay attention to when they happened." President Henry B. Eyring, O Remember, Remember

Plan a time to verbally share with your family the spiritual experiences you have had, and invite family members to share theirs also. This might be a "gathering" type of setting where you are not audio-recording. Preserve these stories at another time.

    Spiritually Defining Memories

"Embrace your sacred memories. Believe them. Write them down. Share them with your family. Trust that they come to you from your Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son. Let them bring patience to your doubts and understanding to your difficulties. I promise you that as you willingly acknowledge and carefully treasure the spiritually defining events in your life, more and more will come to you. Heavenly Father knows you and loves you!" Neil L. Andersen, Spiritually Defining Memories (See also: Week #36, 2020.)

You might want to consider creating a collection of your spiritual experiences, and the spiritual experiences of your family members that they would like to share. This book can be a beautiful and meaningful gift for siblings, children, parents, grandparents, and other family members. You may also record your spiritual experiences using the FamilySearch Memories Audio app or the "Record My Story" feature on FamilySearch Discovery.

When recorded and preserved on FamilySearch Memories, you have the option of placing them in an individual album. See How do I create an album in Memories?

    Doctrine and Covenants 18:13–16

Sharing the gospel brings great joy.

    From Come, Follow Me :

What brings the Lord joy? What does He say will bring us joy?

    Doctrine and Covenants 18:13,16

13 And how great is his joy in the soul that repenteth!
16 And now, if your joy will be great with one soul that you have brought unto me into the kingdom of my Father, how great will be your joy if you should bring many souls unto me!

    Missionary Work and Family History

Role-play missionary scenarios where family history can be a tool for helping people know more about their families, and then talking to them about principles of the gospel. Try enlisting friends and neighbors for this activity.

Divide into companionships and practice door approaches with this guidance from Preach My Gospel: "Talk to people about their families. Help them see how the restored gospel can be a blessing to their families. Offer to help them find the names of grandparents, great-grandparents, or other ancestors. Enlist the help of ward temple and family history consultants."

Plan ahead to be prepared to ask and answer questions and to be able to help people find information about their families.

A fun question to ask is described in An Evening With Elder And Sister Bednar at 44:07. Elder Bednar suggests talking to people about the meaning of their surnames. Do a Surname Search on FamilySearch.org.

Suggestion for journaling this week: Find the promises in Doctrine and Covenants 14–17 and write or audio-record about their influence in your life.
