Below is a partial listing of the records databases referenced in The Family History Guide, arranged by global, region, and country. Click a database title to go to its online site, or click "More" to see an overview of what's in the database and how to use it.
Global
African American Gateway (

African American Gateway, created by the ACPL Genealogy Center, is an online database with “one of the largest research collections available, incorporating records from around the world.”1 In this database, there are five categories to use to explore resources: the U.S States, U.S Regions, other countries, subjects, and legacy events. The first three categories are sorted geographically. The U.S States section hosts an interactive map where you can click on the desired state and it will redirect you to a page of resources about the area. The U.S Regions section splits the United States into broader portions: Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, New England, Northeast, Pacific Northwest, and South. Once you've clicked on a U.S region you'll be redirected to a list of relevant sources. The other countries section provides resources for other areas outside of the U.S.: Africa, Bahamas, Bermuda, Brazil, British Isles, Canada, Caribbean, Cuba, France, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Liberia, Mexico, Norway, Philippines, Sierra Leone, South Africa, West Africa, and the West Indies. The last two categories on African American Gateway are further categorically sorted once clicked upon. The subjects section covers General, Abolition, Bibliography, Biography, Directories, Education, Genealogy Guides, Migration, Military, Native American, Reconstruction, Religion, Slave Narratives, Underground Railroad, and Women. The legacy events section lists two events: the 2011 National Black Genealogy Summit and the 2009 International Black Genealogy Summit. Ancestor Hunt (

Ancestor Hunt is a database devoted to helping those interested in genealogy find links for Free Online Collections. Ancestor Hunt hosts 18 resource categories: yearbooks, obituaries, newspapers, church records, directories, naturalization, photos, cemetery records, voter records, probate and wills, BMD records (birth/marriage/death), school records, alumni records, mortuary records, divorce records, marriage records, immigration and travel records, and coroner records. Each category contains a list of free collection links, a summary of the record type and how to best use it. Important research notes, warnings, tips, or advisories are usually given at the top of the page as a precursor to why something isn't listed or how to better spend your time researching a particular collection of records.

Forbears is a genealogical database that condenses a list of cross-referenced resources for an easier researching experience. As a whole, this database has been geographically indexed and it includes a dictionary of surnames with meanings as well as information about them based on their location. Each country lists numerous record sources with a date range and a small description under category headings such as vital records, marriage records, death records, census records, newspaper records, immigration records, military records, probate records, land records, directories, gazetteers, cemetery records, obituaries, histories, books, school records, business records, pedigrees, nobility records, church records, biographical directories, maps of the country, and reference works. At the bottom of the page, there's a full historical description of each country with a list of the top 10 most common surnames. If you're looking for more possible resources, try the "See all" option located under the last source in most categories.

Geneanet is a genealogical community with millions of members sharing their information free of charge. This database includes family trees, digitized archival records, family pictures, and indexes, made accessible by using their Genenet search engine and blog. Filters can be applied before or after searching the Genenet database in order to locate a particular record type.
Slave Societies Digital Archive (

Slave Societies Digital Archive is a genealogical database preserving "documents related to Africans and African-descended peoples in slave societies."1 Their collection consists of over 700,000 images, which makes close to 2,000 unique volumes ranging from the sixteenth through the twentieth century. The site has ten navigational tabs: Home, About, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Florida, Angola, Benin, Mexico, and Uruguay. Austria GenWeb provides non-residents Austrian genealogical information. It maintain a list of useful links and the main menu splits into six sections: Home, Which Austria, Info, Links, Searches, and Contact. The Austria GenWeb homepage contains a site mission statement, information on how queries may be submitted free of charge to the Austria Mailing List or appropriate message board, an embedded video depicting the history of Europe in three minutes, a layout of to use their website, and links to their social media accounts. The Which Austria tab depicts the shift in borders defining Austria before or after 1918. There are two categories; Modern Austria and the Austrian empire. The Info tab provides Austrian geography tips, maps, history, archives, libraries, and more. The Links tab displays links that are sorted by category and the Search tab helps users craft specific searches while guiding them through the process of posting a query. Lastly, the Contact tab allows for user feedback, suggestions, and comments about the site.

My China Roots was "borne out of a desire to help families overcome the brick walls in the search for their Chinese origins."1 This database offers hired professional genealogical services, a place to start creating a digital family tree, and free access to search some of their online Chinese record collection. Their search records tab allows users to search surnames, graves and burial records, villages, zupus, a knowledge base, ancestors, and the zupu world catalog. You can also conduct searches in Chinese or English.

Our Caribbean Genealogy (or Genealogia Nuestra) is a genealogical database that hosts free resources, collections, and links to other websites covering many Caribbean Islands. There are six navigational tabs: Caribbean Island/Country, Enslaved Ancestors, Genealogy & DNA Websites, African Caribbean Website, FamilyTrees, and About Me. The Caribbean Island/Country tab covers the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao), Antigua, Barbados, Bahamas, Belize, Brazil, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, and the US Virgin Islands. Each island or country's page begins with a representative flag or image and a list of links to assist users with accomplishing ancestral research. The Enslaved Ancestors tab breaks off into two categories: Enslavement Biographies and Enslavement Voyages. These categories will redirect an interested user to a different database once selected where further information can be found. The Genealogy & DNA Websites tab details a list of frequently updated recommended genetic genealogist blogs. The African Caribbean Website Tab is a link that redirects users to Our Caribbean Genealogy's African Caribbean page. The FamilyTrees tab break-off into two sections: Cebreja Familtree- Monte Cristi, Dominican and the Genealogia Nuestra FamilyTree. The Cebreja Familtree contains a name index and pedigree created from the Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic Church records. The Genealogia Nuestra FamilyTree contains the names of families from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, and other Caribbean islands. Lastly, the About Me tab introduces the creator of Our Caribbean Genealogy (or Genealogia Nuestra).

FEEFHS (The Federation of East European Family History Societies) was established in order to "promote genealogical research in Eastern and Central Europe without any ethnic, religious, or social distinctions."1 The FEEFHS "defines Eastern Europe in the broadest, most inclusive sense, taking into consideration current and former political alliances as well as geographic designations."1 The FEEFHS lists basic, yet current, information about Albania, Armenia, Austria, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzigovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, German, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, and Ukraine. Geneanum.com is a free database focusing on Mediterranean genealogy where waves of Italian, Spanish, and French immigration play an important role. This site has a built-in search bar and seven navigational tabs: Home, France, Malta, Sicily, Tunisia, Forum, and Support. The homepage offers a brief description of what Geneanum is and the records they hold. There’s also a sidebar widget linked to their Twitter newsfeed providing live updates. The France tab introduces the area then lists four hyperlinks: Naturalization search, Databases, Source, and Useful Links. The Naturalization search link provides tips and tricks on how to best search these particular records. The Database link lists the French Deaths, Naturalizations, Anom databases however, the same access can be gained from a side widget on the main French tab. The Source hyperlink explains where and how Geneanum acquired its information. Useful Links lists Official and Genealogical websites. The Malta, Sicily, and Tunisia tabs are set up similarly to France. In the Malta tab, you can search for records from the Baptisms, Marriages, Burials, Notaries, Passports, and Census database. In the Sicily tab, you can search for records from the Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials database. In the Tunisia tab, you can search for records from the Births and Baptisms, Marriages, Burials, and None transcribed census database. The Form Tab redirects users to the Digital Genealogy Forum where they can join, post questions, and research amongst each other. Lastly, the Support tab is a PayPal donation portal created to help Geneanum continue to grow.

Slovak Pride Database is a website sponsored by the Slovak Heritage & Folklore Society International to promote Slovakian heritage and genealogical research. The database hosts 30,000 entries for Slovakian surnames and villages. There are five navigational tabs: Home, Our Slovakia, Search, Feedback, and Slovakia Map. The Home tab introduces the database, its holdings, the latest site updates, and shares how to best contact them to request further information. The Our Slovakia tab briefly describes the area and the Search tab has six categories that are alphabetically organized by surname: A-D, E-H, I-L, M-P, Q-T, and U-Z. The Search tab also gives directions on how to search once a category is selected. The Feedback tab provides users with a place to ask questions and submit ancestral surnames to be published in the next site update. Lastly, the Slovakia Map tab links to a map of modern-day Slovakia.
