Family Tree Memories App


Goal 1: Setup and Photos


Goal 1: Download the Memories app and add photos.


The FamilySearch Memories app enables you to add and tag photos, stories, documents, and audio for people in Family Tree.

Note : To add audio to a photo or document, see Choice C in Goal 4.


Choices


ADownload the FamilySearch Memories app and view Memories.


Summary

  1. If you have already installed the FamilySearch Family Tree app,
    a) Open the Family Tree app;
    b) In the three-line menu (upper left) tap Memories;
    c) Tap Install; and
    d) Tap Open to begin. You will then be prompted to sign in to FamilySearch (see the step on account information below).
  2. If you have not installed the Family Tree app, you can visit the Google Play store (Android devices) or the Apple Store to download the app. Read the article to get started.

  3. You will need a FamilySearch account to access Memories information. If you do not have a free FamilySearch Account, in the FmailySearch screen click Create Account (upper right) and follow the instructions. For more help with your FamilySearch account, refer to Goal 13: Account.
  4. Tap the FamilySearch Tree icon on your screen.
  5. Type your username and password, and tap Sign In. If you have forgotten your username or password, tap the link for username or password for help. For help with recovering an account or password, read this article.

  6. Gallery View

  7. By default, all types of Memories (photos, stories, documents, and audio) that you have added are displayed. This is the Gallery view. To display only photos, stories, documents, or audio, tap the corresponding icon (top bar). To select all types, tap the same icon again.
  8. To sign out of FamilySearch, tap the menu (upper left) and select Sign Out.

BAdd, crop, and title a photo in Memories.


Summary

  1. In the lower right, tap the plus icon and then tap Add Photo. (The example at the right shows a Gallery that has existing pictures in a Gallery; your Gallery might be empty.) If a prompt appears asking to allow Memories to access your device's location, tap Allow.
  2. To take a photo for uploading,
    a) Tap Camera;
    b) If prompts appear that ask about allowing Memories to take pictures, record video, and access media, tap Allow;
    c) Take the photo;
    d) Tap the checkmark.
  3. If you want to trim the photo,
    a) Tap Crop; Move the green selector points until the rectangle covers the area you want to keep in the photo; and
    c) Tap Crop.
  4. Tap Save.
  5. To add a photo from a file on your device,
    a) Tap File;
    b) Navigate to the file on your device; and
    c) Tap the filename to add it to the Gallery.
  6. To add a title for the photo,
    a) Tap a picture in the Gallery;
    b) At the bottom of the screen, tap "Add a Title" and type the title, description, and event details;
    c) Select whether the memeory should be public or private; and
    d) Tap Save.
  7. To edit an existing photo title, tap the title name and follow the instructions above.

C Tag a photo to attach it to Memories, for a person in Family Tree.


Summary

  1. Tap the photo, if it is not already open.
  2. Tap the person icon (upper right). The number on the icon indicates how many people in the photo might be tagged.
  3. Tap a sizing square that appears, or tap a person in the photo. Then move the green dot to enlarge or shrink the square, so it fits over person in the photo you want to tag.
  4. If the correct name is already selected, you can use it for the title; otherwise, tap the "Add Name" link.
  5. Select the name or ID you want from the list, or begin typing to find it. If the name or ID does not appear, tap Add New next to the entry you typed to add it to the list.
  6. Tap Done. The photo is now available in the Memories area on FamilySearch for each person you tagged. Tagged individuals are indicated in the "Add Name" list, and the person-plus icon shows the number of people tagged in the photo.
  7. To delete a tag,
    a) Tap the tag square;
    b) Tap the "x" that appears; and
    c) Tap (upper right).

  8. Note : You can also tag a photo in the Gallery by tapping the folder icon above the photo.


Adding Topic Tags
  1. In an open photo, tap the tag icon (upper right).
  2. At the bottom, type the name of the topic tag and select it from the list that appears.
  3. Tap the plus icon to add the tag. You can add multiple tags to the photo.

D Perform various actions for a photo.


Summary
  1. To select actions for a photo that is currently open, tap the three-dot menu (upper right). The following options are available:
    • Rotate Right—The photo is rotated right by 90 degrees.
    • Record a Memory—Tap Start and record up to five minutes of audio for the photo; then tap Done. The recording is then available to be played, below the photo. To delete the recording, tap the Trash icon and then tap Delete.
    • Comments—Type a comment and tap Save to include it with the photo.
    • Details—Type the title, description, event date, and event place for the photo. You can also tap the down arrow to designate the photo as a public or private memory. Then tap Save.
    • Share— Choose a sharing option (if the option you want does not appear, tap the "See All" link) and follow the instructions in the sharing platform you chose.
    • Download—The photo will be downloaded to the Downloads location on your device.
    • Delete—Tap Delete again at the confirmation prompt.
  2. To archive photos in the Gallery view,
    a) Tap the three-dot menu (upper right) and tap Select Memories;
    b) Tap the circle for each photo you want to archive;
    c) Tap the three-dot menu (upper right) and tap Archive; At the prompt, tap Move to Archive.
  3. To delete photos in the Gallery view,
    a) Tap the three-dot menu (upper right) and tap Select Memories;
    b) Tap the circle for each photo you want to delete;
    c) Tap the three-dot menu (upper right) and tap Delete; At the prompt, tap Delete. Note: This deletes only the Memories you selected, not all Memories in the Gallery. You can also use the Delete option when you are viewing a photo, by using the three-dot menu.
  4. You can also add audio to a photo. For details, see Goal 4: Audio.
