Goal 7: Print charts and books.


You can create pedigree charts and books from your family tree, with custom designs that you make. You can print the results or send them to MyHeritage for professional printing.

A Print a variety of charts based on your family tree.


Summary
  1. In the Family tree menu, select Print charts & books.
















  2. Select the type of chart you want to print. Most options have a Vertical or Horizontal layout you can choose from. An example of the chart is shown in the center, and a description at the right of the screen. (Advanced customizations are diuscussed in Choice C below.)










  3. Select the chart style. To see other choices, click the right arrow at the end of the list, or the left arrow at the beginning of the list.

    Note : The chart style changes the background and border but does not affect the chart type or layout.
  4. If desired, set any of these customization options:
    • Main person—Type a name for the main (starting) person on the chart and select it from the drop-down list. Note: This field is required.
    • Title—Type a title for the main person.
    • Facts for individuals—From the drop-down menu, choose the level of detail to include for each person in the chart. If you choose "Custom", you can select criteria from the Advanced Customization Options screen (see Choice C below).
    • Generations—Show all generations of your tree in the chart, or choose a number of generations.
    • Printing method—Select "single page" to produce a large poster, or multiple pages. With multiple pages, you can select the page size and choose whether boxes on the chart cross page boundaries.
  5. Click Generate Chart to print the chart as a PDF file. (You can then print the PDF file to paper.) The "My charts" screen appears, with a list of all charts you have previously created. When the chart is finished, you will receive a notification in the email account you registered with MyHeritage. You can click the Refresh link (next to "Previously created charts and books") to update the printing status.
  6. To clear the chart settings you have chosen so you can start over with a new chart, click the "Restore default settings" link (lower right).

B View, print, order, or delete previously created charts.


  1. At the top of the Charts and Books screen, click My charts.

  2. To view a chart you have created click its title or "View PDF". When the PDF file appears, you can print or save it.
  3. To delete a chart, click Delete and then click Yes in the confirmation window.

C Print charts using advanced customization.


  1. Near the top of the initial Charts & books screen, click Advanced customization options. You can then set any of the options in the following steps.
  2. Individuals : Set the display for children in a bowtie chart. For Hourglass, you can also choose to add the ancestors of the target spouse(s).
  3. Facts for individuals (not custom) : Select one of the options for birth and death facts.
  4. Photos : Select options for personal photos and photo size.
  5. Design :
    • a) Select the design for boxes in the chart.
    • b) To select a photo frame, click the arrow at the right of the example and choose a shape from the list.
  6. Title decoration: To select a title decoration (for "My Family Tree") frame, click the arrow at the right of the example and choose a shape from the list.
  7. Fonts : Select any Chart element from the list (Title, Names, Fact Text, Footer) and set its font characteristics as follows:
    • a) Select the font from the drop-down list. (A sample is shown at the right of the screen.)
    • b) Select the font size.
    • c) Select bold or italic if desired.
    • d) To change the text color, click Text color and select a color from the color picker box.
  8. Background : Set the chart background characteristics as follows:
    • a) Select the background color from the color picker.
    • b) Select a background image: no image, full background image (click the arrow and select an image), tiled background image (click the arrow and select an image), or an image from a URL (type the path to the image to be used).
    • c) Select an option for how the background image fits on the chart.
    • d) Move the slider bar to set the transparency percentage for the background image.
  9. Frame : To select a frame for the chart, click the arrow at the right of the example and choose a frame from the list.
  10. Lines : Set line characteristics as follows:
    • a) For lines between boxes, set the line color, choose a line width (from 1 to 5, with 5 being thickest), and choose the line type (straight or diagonal).
    • b) For lines between spouses, set the line color and choose a line width (from 1 to 5, with 5 being thickest).
    • c) Set line options for adopted and foster relationships, as well as former spouse relationships.
  11. Click Generate chart to produce a PDF of the chart. For more details, see Choice A above.
Exercises



D Create a book from your tree.


  1. In the Family tree menu, click Print charts & books.
  2. Select "Family book" as the chart type (step 1 on the screen).
  3. Type or select the name of the main person for the book.
  4. Select the options you want to include in the family book content.
  5. Set the paper size in the drop-down menu.
  6. Click Generate book.
